Amazing Series!!!

Liberation is book three in the Alien Attachments series by Sabine Priestley. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author.

This book centers on Balastar Alder and Kit Athorika. I am so happy Balastar got his own story. I felt so bad for him when things didn’t work out for him in the earlier book. And boy oh boy will you see another side to the proper gentleman you got to know when you first met him.

Balastar is in search of more of the black devices that can create portals called spatial distorters. This is how he first met Kit. They were both after the distorters when Torogs came after them. Kit’s first impression of Balastar was pure hotness in his pirate type clothing, and Balastar thought Kit was a dark haired beauty with her colored stripe down one side of her hair that constantly changes colors with her mood. The two of them are forced to lay low for awhile on Balastar’s ship. Hmmm, I wonder what they will do to pass the time. Balastar convinced Kit to come back to Earth with him to talk to the Cavacents about what has been going on with her home planet.

The connection is strong with Balastar and Kit but they are both convinced that it is nothing but chemistry. That they can both go their own way when it’s time and say good-bye. That’s what they thought anyway. But the psi-bond has begun, and when it is time to say good-bye, being away from each other does not work out…at all.

Things on the planet Sandaria are rapidly falling apart. The leader of the portal masters is gaining an appetite for power and hatches a crazy plan to take all the power for himself. He is kidnapping the Vertans from their own planet to create and maintain the portals. Balastar, Kit, the Cavacents, and the other earth protectors have to find a way to stop the madness, free the Vertans, stop the power hungry portal masters and restore leadership on Sandaria. During all of this, Kit and Balastar are exploring their new bond and let me tell you, these two are hot!

Kit and Balastar’s travels take them all over the place in the galaxy in their fight to free the Vertans and to save Sandaria and the portals. When Balastar took Kit to Earth and she met Ria and Dani, she found something she had been missing for a long time, friendship. It’s something she hasn’t been able to experience for so long with her own planet being in such turmoil. I really enjoyed getting to see more of all my favorite characters from the previous two books.

This book is a crazy, sexy, nonstop ride from the beginning to the end as this group once again puts themselves in danger to do the right thing, to free the Vertans and restore order on Sandaria. There are no slow spots in this book, it kept me turning the pages all the way through. I have really enjoyed getting to know all the characters I have met throughout these books but I think Balastar and Kit might be my favorite. I have loved this series from the start and highly recommend it.

Balastar Alder after the fall of the empire throws his hat in with the Cavacent clan when they travel to Earth. Balastar becomes a captain of his own ship trying to locate portals that work on a different type psi. He runs in to Kit Athorika from Vertan that can work the different portals while she is being chased by the Torogs for being a thorn in their sides. The Torogs have blockaded Vertan for many years for the leadership of the Portal Masters so they can control the portals and the power that goes with it. Balastar and Kit have an immediate attraction for each other and slowly realize they are psi-mates. They feel their way into a relationship while they bring down the bad guys and return freedom to the Vertans.

Any sci-fi romance reader will like Liberation because Balastar meets his match and Kit is definitely his match in all things.

Another great installment in the Alien Attachments series.

I tumbled headlong back into the world of Alien Attachments with this new book in the series. This story pits Kit Durnar with Baluster Alder and sends them on a quest to free her people, the Vertans, from the quarantine placed on the planet by the Portal Masters, and enforced by the Totogs. That they find love along the way is icing on top of a very adventurous cake.
The descriptions of the world, the action sequences and the love scenes are all done with remarkable attention to detail. The opening will grip you and hold you through the entire book.
This is the third book in the series, and can be read as a standalone. But you will most definitely want to read the earlier books.

Raymond Scupin is Professor of Anthropology and International Studies in Lindenwood University. He received his B.A. degree in history and Asian studies, with a minor in anthropology, from the University of California- Angeles. He completed his M.A. and Ph. D degrees in anthropology at the University of California-Santa Barbara. Dr.Scupin is truly a four-field anthropologist. During graduate school, Dr. Scupin did archaeological and ethnohistorical research on Native Americans in the Santa Barbara region. He did extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Thailand with a focus on understanding the ethnic and religious movements among the Muslin minority. In addition, he taught linguistics and conducted linguistic research while based at a Thai University.

 

Dr.Scupin has been teaching undergraduate courses in anthropology for more than 30 years at a variety of academic institutions, including community colleges, research universities, and a four-year liberal arts university. Thus, he has taught a very broad spectrum of undergraduate students. Through his teaching experience, Dr.Scupin was prompted to write this textbook, which would allow a wide range of undergraduate students to understand the holistic and global perspectives of the four-field approach in anthropology. In 1999, Dr.Scupin received the Missouri Governor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

 

Dr.Scupin has published many studies on his ethnographic research in Thailand. He recently returned to Thailand and other countries of Southeast Asia to update his ethnographic data on Islamic trends in that area, an increasingly important topic in the post 9/11 world. He is a member of many professional associations, including the American Anthropological Association, the Asian Studies Association, and the Council of Thai Studies. Dr, Scupin has recently authored Religion and culture: An Anthropological Focus and Race and Ethnicity: An Anthropological Focus on the U.S. and the World, and Peoples and Cultures of Asia, all published by Prentice Hall Press.

I would like to introduce some of the new features in the eighth edition of Cultural anthropology: a global perspective. This textbook was inspired by one of the first  anthropology textbooks published by prentice hall press authored by the late Eric wolf who emphasized that anthropology has always been scientific and humanistic. Wolf said that "anthropology is both the most scientific of the humanities and the most humanistic of the sciences." (1964:88). We think that this perspective is as relevant today as ever. Eric was kind enough to offer suggestions in developing the first edition of this textbook and we have continued to emphasize his holistic and global focus throughout the different editions. We emphasize what we call the "synthetic-complementary approach" that views the scientific method and the methods within the humanities as complementary and suggest that both perspectives are needed to help explain and understand human behavior and cultures.

 

To achieve our holistic and global focus with coverage of both the classic and the most current research in anthropology, we have had the assistance of many anthropologists who have used and reviewed our textbook for this eighth edition. We have updated and refined all of our chapters in the textbook drawing on the most current research by anthropologists doing research throughout the world.

Dianne Neal Matthews has written her fourth book of daily devotionals and what a compilation of Biblical knowledge. The book is subtitled, "A 365-day journey from Genesis to Revelation," and she has penned at least one devotional from each book of the Bible. If you have a hunger for God's Word, want to grow in your walk with God or are new in your Christian faith, this book will give you a substantial amount of truth and inspiration each day during the coming year.

I am thrilled to write this review for I simply love this devotional! As most of us, I have many devotionals. But from the moment I started to read these daily inspirations, I was hooked. I am going to start reading it again this January 1 for I receive so much from each day. I highly recommend this devotional.

A great way to start my devotions!

I decided to use this book as a new way to start my daily devotions each morning. What a great choice! Matthews uses familiar stories from the Bible and causes you to look at it in a new and different way. Her devotions are short and easy to understand, but leave a powerful message on your heart. I am looking forward to continuing through the book and seeing what other treasures are inside it for me.

Ten Little Indians / And Then There Were None

There is a classic murder mystery story known as "the locked room mystery". Someone is found murdered in a room locked from the inside. No one could have left the room! How did it happen? In this story the locked room is an island where no one can enter or leave. The ten people on this island are murdered one by one. An old nursery rhyme of "ten little Indians" provides a blueprint for the mysterious deaths. Logically, the last survivor would be the presumed murderer, by the process of elimination. But what if this assumption was wrong? It may not sound rational but this story makes it appear so.

Ten people are invited or hired to visit Indian Island off the coast of Devon. After a good meal there is a recorded voice that accuses them of murder. The visitors begin dying off in the manner of that nursery rhyme. After searching the island they realize the murderer is one of the guests! Knowing this does not prevent more deaths. This story keeps your interest until the very end. Scotland Yard cannot figure out the solution until a message was found in a bottle at sea. The movie version modified and enhanced this story. No plan is ever perfect because of the many things that can happen.

This is an example of the classic English murder mystery. The murder exists to provide an intellectual puzzle to entertain the reader. The participants are mostly the middle-class, not average people. The scene is in a large house owned by a rich man. Raymond Chandler pointed out the differences in his essay "The Simple Art of Murder". Most murders occur because of lust or greed, to get it or to keep it. Chandler commented on the highly artificial murder plots which multiply clues that experienced detectives would see through. I found a clue in Chapter IX (but I had seen the movie decades ago).

Chapter XI references one locked room mystery in America. An old gentleman and his wife were killed with an axe. The maid couldn't have done it; the respectable middle-aged daughter was acquitted. No other explanation was ever found. Who killed them? [Arnold Brown's book explains it was done by someone who was kept hidden.]

It took "b" to the next level!

I bought this book recently, and it has changed the game. For the past year "b" and I have been trying to get some local gigs going (we do paradies of rap/hip-hop songs with an academic focus for the college crowd). Before this book, we were terrible, but now I'm decent and "b" is amazing.

"b", Bryan George Steil (or M.C. BUGS as he used to go by) can "freeSteil" as we call it, a parody to almost any song on the spot. It's taken our performce to the next level. We strongly recommend this book, but it could have used more examples throughout (hence no 5 rating).

An important theoretical reference to Galekin methods for PDEs

Written by one of the leading figures in the field of variational methods and numerical mathematics, this book is an invaluable reference for graduate students and researchers working in the field of Galerkin methods. It is written by a mathematician, with the formalism proper of a mathematician; it may thus appear somewhat cumbersome if the reader is seeking an applied insight of the finite element method. However, the inclined engineer/scientist/mathematician will find its formalism an important ingredient to deeply understand the theory behind the method, although built in a very understandable language.
The books covers different types of Galerkin schemes, with special attention to finite elements and spectral elements, and a bit on the finite volume and finite difference methods. It should be considered by those who are willing to make an intellectual effort to understanding the theory of finite elements, but should be avoided by those expecting a book that could help with their practical implementation --some implementation issues are introduced in the context of object-oriented programming, but it may not be enough for beginners. This is the translation of the original Italian edition: Modellistica Numerica per Problemi Differenziali.
