Not as helpful as I would have liked

This book is a helpful resource, but not as helpful as I would have liked. I read many related parts of the blog, where Kelsky spends a significant amount of time telling prospective job applicants what NOT to do with their application documents, giving clear examples, that, sadly, do look like a lot of my own first drafts. What I was hoping for in the book was that there would be additional, equally specific information about what TO DO. Here the advice in this book is much more generic and less helpful. Sentences like "remember to always stay on message," while probably good advice, are not that useful. I can KNOW this and still not know HOW to do this. It is helpful to see others' mistakes so as not to repeat them, but some positive examples would be immensely helpful, or better yet, providing a bad example followed by how to edit/modify, and the resulting positive example. This is, after all, the process most of us go through when we write. The first draft isn't very good, we make modifications, and eventually produce something we're happy (or at least satisfied) about. I appreciate Kelsky tackling this topic, but was disappointed with the lack of concrete advice for writing good job documents.

Indispensable for those considering graduate school, those in it, and those who are considering leaving it (plus their mentors)

I'm an avid reader of Kelsky's blog and purchased this book fairly certain of what it would contain, My high expectations were certainly met. While the book did not contain much information that was "startlingly new," its breadth and depth earn the book its place on my bookshelf. I'm certainly happy to have all of this information in one place so that I can share chapters with colleagues, friends, and students.

Kelsky has written a book designed to empower PhD students who are facing a bleak academic job market. She doesn't guarantee that her readers will earn a "coveted" tenure-track position by reading the book - nor is that her goal. Her mission is to help PhDs get a job, be it academia, alt-ac, or non-ac; and she does this by detailing what job candidates need to know about academia. The readers of her blog or columns in The Chronicle will not be surprised by this goal, nor should they be. Kelsky is an avowed advocate for PhD students and recent graduates who are struggling on the market because they need more guidance.

The book is written for all academic fields, but Kelsky also calls attention to some of the dire conditions in the humanities, and how that may affect PhD candidates and job seekers.

The bulk of the book focuses on preparing for jobs in academia, but it also provides information on leaving academia and finding other ways to utilize the PhD. The book is broken down into ten parts covering everything those looking at the tenure-track need to know, including types of academic institutions (R1/SLACs/R2/etc.), job market documents, offer negotiations, grant writing, and how/when/why to leave academia altogether.

For those who are familiar with her blog, here are the biggest bonuses of her book:
* More real-life examples from emails, letters, and in person conversations Kelsky has had over the years.
* Chapter 4 details how the academic search process works from the university/department side - a land few grads may know as intimately as Kelsky explains.
* Figuring out a 5-year plan and determining what issues of the minutiae of graduate school life will distract you from the goal of making your CV the strongest it can be for the job market.
* Creating your “campaign platform” for the job market
* More specific information on crafting your elevator speech
* Key questions to prepare for in an academic interview (and how to tackle Skype and on-campus interviews)
* Answers the question of what to do when you don’t feel like you belong in academia, for myriad reasons including elitism, racism, gender, sexuality, imposter syndrome, and more

Most importantly for me, having all of this information in one compact book means I have a go-to present for my favorite students who giddily tell me that they want to become a professor. I don't want to discourage them like my undergraduate advisers tried to do to me, but I do want them to be well-informed about what the graduate-school-to-tenure-track life is like. I love having genuinely curious and bright students be interested in becoming a professional in my field (history), but I don't think it necessary that they see "professor" as the only meaningful way to study history or be a historian. I'm glad Kelsky has deepened my understanding of the nuances involved in mentoring students and being a student myself, as well as giving practical and thoughtful advice.

On another note, the book also provides me with a good stocking-stuffer for my non-academic parents who still wonder why I’m “in school” after so many years, and why my work schedule doesn't follow the 9-5 they're used to. I may even send a copy to my adviser.

Must read! Assumes reader is a current grad student.

I used to read Kelsky's blog regularly while on the job market last year and preordered this book (it didn't arrive on the day it released, as was promised). I used it to re-do my application materials this year and have already sent out a few applications.

Here are some thoughts:

Kelsky is the advisor you didn't have. She starts by situating the job market process within the current mess academia is facing and exposing us to the underbelly of the beast we all came to be a part of. This, to me, is the best part of the book. I received a PhD in May 2015 and am part of a tier 1 public university's contingent faculty. How I wish I were aware of the looming PhD bubble that is held in place by dedicated, overqualified, and in most cases, unorganized adjuncts.

Kelsky helps with pruning application materials and editing out superfluous language.

Some parts of the book seem more useful than others. For example, the section on the teaching statement doesn't really add much to what is out there. Kelsky tells us what not to do but gives us no directions on what to do to get this genre right.

Most of this material is already on the blog but this is money well-spent as far as I'm concerned. I find myself getting distracted by tangential posts when I go to the blog for the same advice. Some of the posts seem to be updated in the book version.

I'd recommend that every graduate student or pre-graduate student lay their hands on this, that advisors hand out and discuss this book with their advisees well before they face the job market.

Something I really didn't like about the book - Kelsky's assumption that the reader is a grad student currently finishing their dissertation, which doesn't make a lot of sense considering the first couple of chapters on the situation of the market. This assumption was extremely unhelpful for me as I just received my PhD and, like many others, didn't get a Tenure Track job in the first round of applying. I have a PhD now, publications, and a contract position. What strategies do I adopt? What changes do I need to make to my application that may be different from what a grad student might do? For instance, how should I write my research plan? Do I still need to write a paragraph on my dissertation or might I use that space for something else? Do my recommendation letter writers have to be my dissertation advisors, now that they're not my advisors? So many questions that are unanswered.

I haven't had the chance to practice the tips on interviewing. Will post an update in Mar/April next year after interviewing and, hopefully, getting a job!

"Humans, unfortunately, are unpredictable. Often it's with the best intentions that they cause the greatest damage." So says the wise cat, Colonel, in Sepulveda's charming tale of devotion, courage and the importance of keeping one's word. A man-made disaster indeed gets the story started: a female gull becomes mired in an enormous oil slick and expends all of her remaining energy in a final flight to safety. She lands on the balcony of an apartment building, where she meets the fat black cat Zorba and extracts a threefold promise from him: that he will not eat the egg she is about to lay, that he will look after it and, once it is hatched, that he will teach the fledgling how to fly. Zorba enlists the help of his good and noble friends ("He gave his word of honor, and the word of one cat of the port is the word of all the cats of the port," says Colonel). Each is endearing and distinctive, from the sage but stammering Colonel to the hilariously forthright Secretario to the encyclopedia-consulting Einstein. With shades of the friendship between a spider named Charlotte and a pig named Wilbur, the relationship between Zorba and Lucky (the name the feline gives the baby gull) explores fundamental questions of life and death, and following one's calling. Sepulveda also fills the brief chapters with memorable everyday moments: the busy Italian restaurant that serves the cats around the back (but only with a reservation), the catalogue of wonders cached in the house of Harry, a human friend to the cats. The language throughout, translated by Peden, is a marvel of economy and warmth, and Sheban's delicate charcoal and pastel illustrations heighten the sense of magic (particularly a wordless spread of Lucky taking flight over Hamburg by night). A must have for Children

Kengah is a gull on a journey to lay an egg where, when hatched, the chick would grow and thrive safely. Zorba, a coal-black cat, is anticipating a month's vacation from his human friend.

But when Kengah's wings are weighed down by an oil slick, she aborts her travel plans and struggles to the nearest port to lay her final egg. Kengah is able to fly to the balcony of a nearby apartment building where she meets Zorba. As Kengah lays dying, Zorba promises three things; that he will not eat the egg, he will watch over the egg, and when it's time, he will teach the chick to fly. Zorba is a cat with a sense of honor and with three cat friends, struggles to learn about gulls so he will be able to keep his promise to the dying gull.

The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly by Luis Sepulved is an extraordinary tale about the lengths a parent will go for a child. It is beautifully written with compassion and humor. It proves that when commitment, honor and love are involved, great differences can be overcome.

The black and white illustrations are amazing. This is a book for ages 8-12 and one that parents will want to read to and share with their children. This book and its message are so beautiful that it should have a permanent place in that special child's library. I love this book!

I read this book to my 7 year old twin girls, and the three of us loved it. The vocabulary, the humor, the characters were all wonderful. I have high hopes that the author will continue to write children's books.

A Great Story of Courage in the Face of Environmental Disaster and an Excellent Translation

This book is a great read for all ages, and it is appropriate for children 7 to 12. The summary provided by Amazon is correct. The only thing I have to add that it is a story of great feeling, and from an academic standpoint, it is useful to develop language art skills and language learning skills. I think it is best read if read aloud. If I had children, I would read them this book at night.

Wonderful Awakening

Sell Like a Marine is chock full of so many great, wonderful, helpful, mind-changing selling concepts! Cory reveals the principles in such a conversational manner, with many concepts shown through personal stories, which made everything Cory Steiner suggests so much more concrete. I'm really pleased I read it, and I highly recommend to everyone.

Inspiring look at the world of sales from a grass-roots and tenacious author. Steiner correlates his ethos as a disciplined Marine to that of a commercially successful career in sales. His writing style is engaging and he gets right to the point. A highly recommended book for those considering a career in sales or those already in sales who are looking to advance to the next level. "Sell Like a Marine" was one of the better books in its genre that I've encountered.

Worth picking up, harder to put down!

I bought this book for two reasons: 1) Henry Beston spent time on Cape Cod near where my parents now reside, and 2) I wanted some less well known material to read for my daughter when she gets a little older (she is only 9 months now).

The writing is very simple and clear, and the stories are very direct. None of them takes long to read - the stories can generally be read in 5-10 minutes going at a decent pace - and they would work well for a young reader. There's actually a small section devoted to introducing some of the more obscure words, like 'halberdsman.'

Each of these stories offers subtle lessons on how to behave, and how not to behave. They are clever and cute, and also often feature strong female characters, which is a refreshing change from the normal mainstream stuff that has most of the women requiring rescue.

I've actually already read two of the stories to my daughter, and whether it was just that she liked Daddy's voice, or the stories, she actually did listen. I would definitely recommend this book for young children and young readers.

Delightful collection of original tales

The Firelight Fairy Book, published in 1919, is a delightful collection of original fairy tales (with an introduction by Theodore Roosevelt). Written in a language that is clear and direct but somehow evocative of magic, each tale is different than the one before -- enchantments, talking animals, quests, fairies, and mysterious kingdoms are all featured. I can imagine children liking these stories a great deal -- I know this adult did!

This is an absolutely fantastic book of original fairy tales. They were clever and fun and...just overall amazing.

Despite being almost 100 years old, the stories have fairly modern values and morals, although every so often there was a sentence that made me wince and shake my head. They were pretty uncommon, so I'd still rate this book as G (if it were a movie), but if you're very, very sensitive, then you should probably read it over first. (If you're not very, very sensitive, you'll probably just laugh at me for giving the warning at all...)

There is no active table of contents, and no illustrations. The captions from the pictures are still disconcertingly in the text in a few places.

Easy to read book. Simple, but effective advice to lose weight after child birth. Another greathit by author E. Goldsmith.

This book, “Weight Loss after Child Birth - How to keep it off for good naturally” by author Elizabeth Goldsmith, is considered by me as a following book from its predecessor “The Ultimate Guide to Eating during Pregnancy” ( The Ultimate Guide to Eating during Pregnancy ).

This book is written by Elizabeth Goldsmith’s unique way to present it, with simple, direct and effective guidelines as reasonable to follow and understand that you will be able to recover, not only your regular body healthy shape, but may improve your old way of living into a more healthier, natural, and successful way of living.

As this books goes from good exercises and a sensible well-balanced diet, which means that you can eat well and also it means that there is high importance to learn about properly eating habits. As the author Elizabeth Goldsmith wrote on her book: “The best way to lose weight, the healthy way, is to change the way you eat food and not really about dieting. Improve your diet by going for healthy eats rather than eating less.”

Veggies, fruits, lean meats, whole grains, source of proteins and calcium and healthy fat shall be included in your daily intake, but how???; well, start by reading this book and you will get the basics and don’t you forget that some exercise routine is needed so you can keep your metabolism rolling and renew your hormones, good intake of fresh oxygen to your blood, also getting new nutrients and the proper release of waste (lymphatic drainage, hormones waste, etc.). So, that is basically the main objective, learn to eat, do some exercise and be a joyful new mother by taking care of you and your newborn baby. Remember, you must take good care of you in order to be able to take care of your baby and others. Don’t you forget that you are very important and deserve to be nourish.

You will enjoy this book as I have enjoyed and will continue to do so as the advice contained is one to keep in mind for long time and to serve as foundation for future and deeper knowledge on reasonable dieting, proper exercise and do please drink lots of water every day. Don’t you forget about daily supplements intake and vitamins to complete your proper daily intake.

Nothing New To Offer, And Some Incorrect Information To Boot

I'm 3 months postpartum with my third child, so I'm probably the exact person this book is targeted at: the busy mom with a newborn and other children to care for who has recovered from giving birth and is looking now to start losing the baby weight. I didn't find anything new or novel in this book, though. The entire thing essentially boiled down to, "Eat a healthy, well balanced diet", and "Here is a description of some exercises you could do" (which, like other reviewers have noted, would have benefited from photographs to show how to properly perform them. All text isn't ideal when it comes to figuring out how to perform a movement properly!). I actually took exception to some of the diet advice (particularly the "fact" that breastfeeding women cannot have any alcoholic beverages ever. There's a perfectly responsible way for a woman to imbibe without causing any harm to her baby, and in fact sometimes dark beers are recommended to increase milk production. So I felt there was actually some incorrect information provided!) and the exercises weren't anything you couldn't find a thousand times over on Pinterest. So if you really don't have ANY idea where to start, then maybe this book would be helpful for you, but I think most readers will say, "Um, yeah, obviously. But what ELSE do you have to say?" and end up disappointed with the lack of an answer to that question.

Common sense - decent reminders!

This book is a decent book. Nothing too great, nothing horrible. It's pretty much common sense just laid out for people in one spot.

For someone who doesn't want to take the time to do their own research in how to lose weight, especially after child birth - this would be the perfect book. It has some pretty helpful reminders and guidelines that would be great for anyone to follow, after baby or not.

It gives a few options for exercises but for some people who have never done them before, it would have probably been helpful for their to be diagrams or photos to help out.

Overall, like I said, nothing great, nothing horrible - just a decent book of rules and suggestions on how to lose weight effectively and keep it off - again - common sense!

Wildlife artist Norman Arlott has illustrated nearly 100 books and his artwork regularly appears in magazines. Good size and weight. Easy to read text, but illustrations are small and poorly printed

The Strengths: Hardcover edition has a easy to use binding; the book opens up flat to any page. The font is easy to read. the text is informative but brief, just what is needed in a field guide. The compact size and moderate weight make it easy to carry around.

The Disapppointment: The illustrations are small, unappealing and often not easy to differentiate. The colors are super-saturated and un-natural. The browns and blacks are so dark, one cannot make out the wing from the body, nor see the eyes.
For one who started birdwatching in India in the 80s using the superbly illustrated and printed Collins Guide...by Martin Woodcock, these uninspiring illustrations and mediocre color printing are a tremendous let-down and greatly diminish the usefulness of this Field Guide.
The Birds of the Indian Subcontinent (Second Edition) has much better illustrations ( but tiny font and wordy text).

Great illustrations, but the printing quality detracts from the quality of this book

Norman Arlott is one of the great modern bird artists and in this book he covers India.

The quality of the printing in my hardcover edition is not up to snuff in that many pages the illustrations are washed out and the dark colors are too heavy and detract from quality of the illustrators images.

Excellent small, affordable and attractive field guide to Indian Sub-Continent

This is an excellent small, but comprehensive, field guide to India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Short descriptions of field notes, voice, habitat and distribution are informative and useful and well written. Please do not regard this book as a replacement for the more expanded volume by Grimmett, et al, covering the same area but in much greater detail. It is a wonderful complement to it. This is at least equal to the excellent standard of Norman Arlott's other guides in the Collins Field Guide and the Princeton Checklist series.

The artwork is very good and and gives accurate and useful representations of the wealth of birds in this sub-continental area. Multi-color maps for all species are in the back and are small, but quite good. A great value and a lovely guide!

John Kotter has been on the faculty at Harvard Business School since 1972. He is the author of eleven award-winning titles and frequently gives speeches and seminars at Harvard and around the world. Harvard Business School professor Kotter, author of the bestselling Leading Change (1996), teams up with executive Rathgeber to offer his contribution to the "business fable" genre. Kotter presents his framework for an effective corporate change initiative through the tale of a colony of Antarctic penguins facing danger-inspired, perhaps, by today's real-life global warming crisis (or, perhaps, by March of the Penguins' box office). Under the leadership of one particularly astute bird, a small team of penguins with varied personalities and leadership skills implement a thoughtful plan for coaxing the other birds in their colony through a time of necessary but wrenching change. The logic of Kotter's fictional framework is wobbly at times-his characters live and act very much like real penguins except that one carries a briefcase and another ("the Professor") cites articles from scholarly journals-and the whimsical tone will not be to everyone's taste. However, this light, quick read should fulfill its intended purpose: to serve as a springboard for group discussions about corporate culture, group dynamics and the challenges of change.

Excellent book for facing change:
I work as a psychiatrist with persons with intellectual developmental disorder(IDD) (earlier called mental handicap) and their families. The chief challenge of my work is to bring a positive approach to training efforts by the parents. As parents with a ‘special child’ parents face many challenges in bringing up and in planning for the child’s future. This responsibility is not what parents wanted, when the child was born into their family. The needs of ‘special child’ requires parents to think completely differently about a number of areas like day to day care, training the child, schooling, health care, planning for the future etc. It is these challenges that require you to take up the challenges and find new ways of succeed.
The central theme of my work, is to EMPOWER YOUR CHILD AND YOUR FAMILY TO FACE THE CHALLENGES.
It is in this context, that the book ‘Our iceberg is melting’ has a special meaning to you and your family.
Most parents pass through life denying the ‘special’ needs of your child. From the book, parents learn to accept the situation, by accepting your child’s ‘special’ needs that they can be of greatest help to him/her.
The book introduces the 8 principles of problem solving, which is useful to parents in a slightly modified form, as below.
1. Recognise the special needs of your child and importance of training
2. Pull together all members of your family
3. Develop a vision for your child and a Strategy
4. Reach out professionals for help and support
5. Acquire skills to train your child

Kotter's Eight Step method of change in a fable

"Our iceberg is melting" is a small and very (too?) easy to read book that mainly consists of a fable about penguins who notice that they need to change. The penguins then happened to follow Kotter's eight-step process of successful change, so you can learn this eight-step process by learning from the penguins :)

The first 100 pages in the book is the fable about penguins who need to move to a new home as they discovered their iceberg is melting. They convince the senior management penguins and plan the change with a selected team of change agents. They manage to convince the other penguins that action is needed, get a quick win and manage to successfully change.

After that, there are a few pages explaining the eight-step process for change that was taken from John Kotter's research and his earlier books on managing change. The pages aren't enough to get an in-depth understanding of Kotter's research, but for that, you will need to read Kotter's other work.

The story was easy to read as it was simple (simplistic?). I found it mildly interesting. There wasn't much news in this book if you are already familiar with Kotter's research, but then again it doesn't take much time to read as the book is very thin. The book wasn't bad, but I would probably not recommend it to anyone either as it was definitively not a book that impressed me. I was thinking about 2 or 3 stars. Decided to go with 3 as it does seem to achieve its own purpose. Just ok.
