Great Overview of Political Ideas from Ancient Times to Today
By MacheteJason
This is another Big Ideas Simply Explained book from DK Publishing (other books examining Psychology, Philosophy, Economics and Religions are available). All the Big Ideas books are well-written, concise, easy to understand and contain pictures and diagrams summarizing key ideas. The downside is that some things are oversimplified because each idea gets only a page or two of coverage. The Politics Book examines major political ideas and the politicians and revolutionaries behind them. High school students and adults who want a light intro into the world of politics from a historical perspective seem to be the targeted audience. The book is divided into several parts: 1) Ancient Political Thought, 2) Medieval Politics, 3) Rationality & Enlightenment, 4) Revolutionary Thoughts, 5) The Rise of the Masses, 6) The Clash of Ideologies, and 7) Postwar Politics.
Some people who get expanded coverage in this book include: Confucius, Sun Tzu, Plato, Aristotle, Chanakya, Thomas Aquinas, Niccolo Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Immanuel Kant, Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, Jeremy Bentham, James Madison, Georg Hegel, John Stuart Mill, Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mahatma Gandhi, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Carl Schmitt, Mao Zedong, Friedrich Hayek, Simone de Beauvoir, Arne Naess, John Rawls, Frantz Fanon, and Martin Luther King Jr. Interestingly, religion and philosophy dominated political thinking until the Renaissance when Machiavelli's The Prince defined modern political science as a separate discipline. Machiavelli is one of the most original thinkers in the entire book. Most of the text is dedicated to the post-Medieval period in addition to a small introduction of ancient and medieval beliefs about the role of government. It seems many politicians were content to preserve tradition or simply improve on the ideas of philosophers. Postwar Politics examines the environmental movement, minority rights and rights for women. Overall, this book does a great job of examining major political concepts throughout history but it does have some biases.
The Politics Book strikes a moderate path and mostly focuses on political thought from democratic nations. Political thought from 1848 to the present (the last three chapters occupy more than half the book) are predominant. Unfortunately, the great Roman Republic only gets one page of treatment. Also, the article on the right to bear arms seems partisan and not as objective as it could be. It doesn't present all sides of the argument including the landmark 2008 decision that the amendment protects an individual right to possess and carry firearms regardless of service in a militia. The authors take a dim view of most monarchies, religious authorities, and conservative politics. Totalitarian regimes such as Mao Zedong's Communism and Stalin's Marxism are rightly denounced (though Hitler's National Socialism is mentioned only in passing). There isn't much discussion on current world affairs, political parties or political concerns in any specific country. However, this book works well as an introduction to Western democratic political ideas for people who want basic information and an overview of major political thought throughout history.

Excellent
By J. Molley
If you have read any other of the books from this series and liked them- you won't be disappointed in this book. Clear explanations, many subjects cover, and I didn't detect any "political bias" to the best of my knowledge.

This book is very simple and easy to read, but some articles are way too short, and are occasionally poorly written
By Noah A
Pros for me:
Good and easy to understand pictures: On nearly every article there is a picture/drawing of some sort. The pictures help make the articles easier to read and understand
Covers philosophers from pretty much all time periods: The articles date as far back as Confucius and Sun Tzu and go as far as the 20th century
Covers philosophers from multiple political ideologies: There are articles about Conservatism, Communism, Liberalism, Realism, etc.
On most articles, there is a background of the philosopher, which is always interesting and fun to read
Easy to pick up and read: You can easily pick this book up and read an article or two in five minutes without being totally lost or have to think deeply
Most articles were pretty objectively written. There were a few bad ones in particular, but most of them didn't distort the philosophers ideas or say something like "This view is unacceptable."
Cons:
Some articles are very short and lack detail, sometimes covering only a page.
Some philosophers with very complex and confusing (at first) viewpoints, often have short articles that don't fully explain the ideas very well or with a lot of depth
A particularly bad article on James Madison, the constitution, and modern gun control that is very poorly written, subjective, and has very, very little and insufficient reasoning and evidence to support the author's viewpoint. There's another Amazon review that criticizes this bad article as well.
