The BEST obstetrical book EVER!

I used this book in the 1990's during nurse midwifery school and it was my favorite text. As an author and professor, I could no longer use the book as it had not been republished for some time. I was beyond thrilled when I saw it was updated. I was not disappointed! This is what I personally consider the "Bible of Obstetrics". It is concise, extremely readable, and includes crucial content without erroneous information and fluff. The new colored drawings are beautiful and the content is well laid out. They include statistical information and precise headings that make looking up content fast and easy. I have an extensive library of obstetrical textbooks and need to purchase the most current versions for textbook writing purposes; however, this is really the ONLY book you need. I often give students a short list of books I would take if I was on a deserted island and needed references to look up information. This is #1 on my list! Great revision!!

Packed full of easy to read information

This book is a great supplement to Varney's. Oxorn-Foote has great, easily legible, full-color illustrations (though I do question proportions in them sometimes) of many obstetric variations and complications. The layout of the book, with bold heading graphics and colored margin tabs, makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I also enjoy the writing style. To wit, this on shoulder dystocia:

"Usually equanimity forsakes the attendants. They push, they pull. Alarm increases. Eventually by greater strength of muscle or by some infernal juggle the difficulty appears to be overcome, and the shoulders and trunk of a goodly child are delivered."

My only beef with the book is that it is very much old-school OB about presenting all graphics as if the woman is in lithotomy. If you want to visualize side-lying or hands and knees though, just flip the book around. Oh, and it doesn't mention the Gaskin maneuver by name, merely calling it "all fours."

I'm a doula and pre-nursing student, and as I attend births I often leave with questions. I got an inexpensive used copy of this book as a way to become more familiar with the medical side of labor and birth, and it more than does the job. It's overkill for someone in my position, and yet absolutely fascinating and informative. In depth anatomy, physiology and practical medical information about labor and birth is presented in a concise, understandable, and thoroughly illustrated format.

I don't expect to ever read it straight through (unless it is required reading in school somewhere down the line) and the practical advice isn't anything I am in the position to use, but it's an interesting addition to my reference bookshelf as I try to sort out and understand for myself the medical side of what I see/hear at births.

Great resource to get kids thinking critically and improving comprehension and vocabulary

I'm a parent reading volunteer and just love how useful
and practical the summaries and exercises are. The kids love
doing them. We work on vocabulary pages in teams, which they love and
cheat sheet answers in back help me, when I'm forgetful.

The story itself is wonderful and full of experiences that kids can relate to and squeal about
and recall in vivid detail. Thanks much. I'll be looking for this "helper" guide for the next book we select.
It saves me so much prep work. I highly recommend it. Job well done.

Outstanding Resource!!

Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.

Fantastic resource, terrible photographs.

This is the first review I've ever felt compelled to write on Amazon. I'm so torn on this book-- Anita Rui Olds was absolutely the preeminent authority on designing spaces for young children, and the value of the information contained in this book alone makes it worth its weight in gold. But I was so terribly disappointed at the quality of the practically-newsprint, see-through pages and dark black & white photos! Even the COLOR charts are in black & white! A large portion of the value of these sorts of curriculum and environmental design guides is in the photographs, which provide both examples of the ideas outlined in the text and further inspiration. This is why I recommend a book like "Designs for Living and Learning" and other books by Deb Curtis and Margie Carter, because the photos in those books are absolutely gorgeous and definitely serve to inspire teachers and other early childhood professionals. But if you're planning to open a childcare center and you need the nitty-gritty details on what shape you want the building to be, how to lay out the floor plan, what colors to paint based on the age group of the children and purpose of the space, etc, then buy this book and just try to ignore the photos, because the information alone will be worthwhile for you.

Long awaited, exceeds expectations

Lavish use of illustrations--photos, sketches, floor plans, and examples--and attractive layout support Ms. Olds's incisive text to create a remarkably accessible book. Many hundreds of child care professionals and architects who have studied under Ms. Olds will recognize and welcome this work as the summation of the concepts that placed the author at the forefront of her field.
More and more children are in institutional care and, "in search of a model," day care typically happens in society's "leftover" spaces, church basements, warehouses, and places intended for adults. This book will help anyone committed to doing better for our children to "see that young children are raised in nurturing, spirited settings that honor their precious young souls." (from the introduction)
The book's only drawback is technical as the reproduction of photographs is of disappointing quality.
Tragically, Anita Olds did not live to see this book published. We can be thankful that she left it for us, full of her passion for children. In its use we will honor her spirit as we effect her designs.

Conservatives and liberals both have their treasured narratives that they repeatedly chant like a mantra. Evans and Romerstein are conservative journalists, and both have written extensively on issues related to the Cold War. Here they deal with the issue of “massive” and, in their view, effective Soviet infiltration of agents into the highest levels of the successive Roosevelt administrations during the 1930s and 1940s. And they aren’t making stuff up. Using recently declassified information from both Soviet and American archives, they show that Soviet efforts at subversion were indeed massive, but that point has been made before. Yet Evans and Romerstein go much further. They assert that successful Soviet efforts to insert agents into the government led, naturally, to the passing of information and also to strong influence over foreign policy. For example, based on very fragmentary evidence, they claim that Alger Hiss strongly influenced the American concessions made at Yalta. About the Author
M. Stanton Evans is the author of seven previous books, including Blacklisted by History and The Theme Is Freedom. Now a contributing editor at Human Events and a contributor at National Review, he was previously the editor of the Indianapolis News, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times syndicate, and a commentator for CBS and Voice of America. He lives near Washington, D.C.

Herbert Romerstein was head of the Office to Counter Soviet Disinformation at the U.S. Information Agency from 1983-1989. He had previously served on the staff of several congressional committees, including the House Intelligence Committee.

The Russian bear was everywhere

It has long been opined that in many ways the Cold War was a war of shadows, in which espionage and intelligence have played a central role in it. According to some experts' views the spies helped maintain the balance between both sides, the East and the West, making sure that no side would gain any advantage over the other in any field, especially in the strategic and tactical fields. I concur with this view and, in fact, I am more than certain that intelligence was a powerful tool in the hands of the policy makers during this war.
This new book only sharpens this view by presenting its central thesis which is as follows: the penetration of Russian spies into almost all the federal agencies of the USA was extremely deep. Unfortunately, as the authors claim, the overall picture is still far from being complete, since so many original documents were destroyed, sanitized or manipulated. In other words,it will take many more years to get the real and full picture of the role that intelligence played in this war.
But this book is not really about spies;it is about agents of influence, working on behalf of their Russian masters, who controlled tham from the Kremlin or inside the USA. These agents were to be found in any governmental agency and names such as Alger Hiss, Elizabeth Bentley and Harry Hopkins are well known.
However, the authors have done a very good job in bringing to surface some more names of tens of people who were involved in establishing a constant channel between Moscow and Washington, through which vital information was reaching the upper echelons of the Russian leaders.Hundreds of Soviet agents, Communist party members and fellow travellers were ensconced on offficial payrolls, beginning in the New Deal era.These were able to serve the cause of Moscow and betray America's national interests.
The book includes photos of many important documents, and among them one can find original ones hitherto unknown. In addition, it also offers the reader an excellent analysis on key issues regarding the way those agents were employed, starting from the 1930s until the fifties. Highly recommended!

Mighty History!

And concise history too! That was my one complaint about Blacklisted by History--M. Stanton Evan's immortal biography of Senator McCarthy--was that it was too long for me to really get a handle on. This release is completely different as Stalin's Secret Agents is concise but very informative. Evan's thesis is correct: socialist infiltration of our government in the forties is the greatest story never told! Even if one fails to use the term as a descriptor of an individual, the left howls "McCarthyism" should one even imply that socialism is real and that socialism exists today. Yet it does, and its continued existence is assisted by the protection of the Obama White House. Making the threat known was a major reason why the left clamored so hard to get Glenn Beck off the air. Here, in this book, the historian discusses many facts that are readily available elsewhere in historical scholarship concerning Venona--specifically, in the many Klehr and Haynes books along with a couple by Herbert Rommerstein. So it's not that Evans is saying anything new here as much as he succeeds in presenting a sharply crafted and readable narrative. Again, this isn't written in the encyclopedic style. It's a tightly wrapped tale that is also very enjoyable. Once you've consumed the text you'll have no doubt that FDR was the biggest communist dupe in history. Right underneath his cigarette holder crawled the nefarious traitor Harry Hopkins, a man who single handedly gave Poland over to totalitarianism. He also delivered our uranium and heavy water supplies to the Soviets via his manipulations at a base in Montana. You'll become furious upon observing the method by which Hopkins undermined the careers of those military men who stood up to him. You'll also be discomforted by the fashion by which those communists in our government purposefully sacrificed China to Mao Zedong. Chapter 16, Operation Keelhaul, was one of the darkest moments in this nation's history. Even now, the left continues to subvert America and its citizens. I say: Read this book! Its outstanding. M. Stanton Evans is one of our best historians and his continued labors also prove that excellence never retires.

Horrifying to read how deeply US Govt was penetrated

Reading this book fills you with an increasing dread to see how deeply the US Govt in the FDR administration was penetrated by traitors working directly for the Soviet Union. It becomes drepressingly clear that FDR was so naive and feckless in allowing himself to be surrounded by and eventually grossly manipulated by these people that he was in serious violation of his oath of office to protect and defend the United States. These Soviet agents not only surrounded Roosevelt but were gaining control of wartime and postwar policy making bodies, especially the State Department, purging them of anti-communist and security personnel in order to advance the interests of the Soviet Union. The Army's G2 files on subervises were broken up and buried in the archives, and the office closed down. Restrictions on employment of Communist Party of the USA members by the Government and their commissioning in the armed forces were lifted, all directed by the White House at the instigation of these traitors, chief of whom was Harry Hopkins. The book especially focuses on Hopkins role as the most powerful man in the Government after FDR and his unfailing efforts to give Stalin everything he wanted with no quid pro quo or consideration of American interests and to put the US Government fully behind the advancement of Soviet interests. And it goes on and on. This is well-researched and argued book, and I recommend it for every citizen jealous of his liberties. It is a cautionary tale of how the Left continues to operate, distilled in the CPUSA slogan of the 1940s: "There are no enemies on the Left." That, some may have noticed, is how the mainstream media treated candidate Obama in the last two elections. Peter G. Tsouras

A Great Work of Transformative Sex

This is the best work in transformative sex literature that I have ever read. I wish that I could give it more than five stars. Most works of pornography are short and get immediately to the sexual actions. Subtly is never even thought of, let alone tried. In the sexual transformation genre, if the character being changed is a woman, she is almost instantly transformed into some sex-craving bimbo. However in this tale, Tang uses a measured pace. Monica, the central character, is not sure if she even wants to get involved in finding out who Monique is, a person who haunts Monica's dreams. Even the possibility that Monique is actually Monica when she was younger, does not immediately induce her to succumb to the temptation to adopt Monique's sexually adventuresome lifestyle. Monica at times turns her back completely on the idea. But gradually, and thus more realistically, Monica submits to the attraction of being Monique. Additionally, Tang's use of lush, erotic language captures our minds and pulls us into Monica's transformation. By telling the story from the perspective of Monica, we are submerged into her sexual transformation and experience her emergence as an erotic woman.

The story is set in London and follows Monica, a single, introverted twenty-eight year old, with a stifling career, little social life and less sex. What she has experienced of sex has been only mildly exciting and dominated by the man's needs. She is gradually drawn into a new life by the psychologist, Dr. Harcourt. The alter ego that Dr. Harcourt is helping to emerge from, or is it to implant into? Monica is Monique. Bilingual in French and English, Monique is a recent divorcee, cosmopolitan, self-confident and in control in her all that she does, including her active and adventurous sex life. Every step of Monica's transformation is filled with pleasurable dreams of Monique's sexual encounters. The dreams entice Monica to adopt progressively more of Monique's sexual behaviors by rewarding Monica with intense sexual gratification as she dreams of Monique's sexual encounters. A constant theme in each dream is Monique's domination of her male sexual partners. Following each dream, Monica yields to a seemingly irresistible urge to buy fashionable clothing with definite erotic overtones, replicating the style of Monique.

Monica's involvement with clothing is only one of many techniques that Tang's skillfully uses to effect her transformation. This approach succeeds because we all at some level realize that clothing is our second skin and it conditions and reflects so much of our self-image. As we meet Monica, she wears drab, functional clothing, making her socially invisible and sexless. Whether at work or on a date, Monica is interpersonally inept. Her inability to select a reasonably fashionable wardrobe mirrors this aspect of her personality. However, the worldly Monique wears expensive and chic clothing, with rich colors or bold black, definitely revealing of her sexual attributes, and always perfectly suited to the occasion. Monique's attire reflects both her polished social skills and unswerving pursuit of an active sex life. Enticed by her dreams, Monica can't resist wearing progressively more items of clothing favored by Monique. In time, Monica comes to wear sensuous, silken undergarments, tight fitting leather outerwear that embrace and reveal her curvaceous figure, and sexy camisoles that display tempting visions of her ample breasts. The sexual attitudes of Monique are infused into Monica's mind by the erotic feel and bold look of the clothing. Attired in Monique's styled clothing, Monica is filled with an exhilarating sense of assertiveness and a continuous desire for sexual adventures. As Monica's sexual transformation nears its end, she discards her former boring wardrobe and with it all of her outdated sexual attitudes, and now embraces Monique's role as a dominating seductress with an uninhibited desire for sex.

All of that would be good enough, but there is more. Monica/Monique is no mindless bimbo, and in a subplot she pursues a legal career. Monica begins the story as a law school graduate, who has ended up as a legal secretary in a back water legal firm. But her new Monique persona leads her to obtain employment with a prestigious law firm as an international legal counselor. Her income skyrockets, allowing her to afford the lifestyle of the rich, including her extensive wardrobe. Her confidence in her professional capacity supports her sexually dominant personality. The seductress Monica has sex with numerous men, none is her favorite, for she enjoys her time with all of them. In her sexual escapades, Monica is the assertive partner, a predator if the mood fits her. If she decides that she wants sex, then she initiates the action, not the man, she seduces him, and ultimately directs the sex. Even if the man should try to seduce her, she turns the tables on him. Certainly, all the men know who is in charge, but Monica/Monique is not demeaning. She creates the environment and the event, which is always a pleasurable erotic adventure, but she strives and succeeds in giving her partners what they want. All the men come away sexually sated from the encounters.

As the journey nears its end, Monica sees every encounter, be it business or social, as an opportunity to entrap another sexual partner to satisfy her craving for sex and domination. Speaking with delightfully sexy French accent, Monica, who when in public is now always in the guise of Monique, effortlessly flirts with any man to whom she is attracted, and wants and engages in frequent and varied sex, which she controls. Unlike any sexual experiences prior to her involvement with Harcourt, these encounters fill Monica with highly charged sexual energy, which derive both from the erotic sex, and the ego gratification of being a dominatrix. In her final act as Monica, she asks Dr. Harcourt to dissolve the few remaining residuals of her prior self, which he eagerly does. Monique's memories of Monica's life melt away as thoroughly as diaphanous clouds on a bright, sunny morning. Now Monica knows herself only as Monique. Tang has given us a most enjoyable fantasy. Who among us would not wish to be transformed into someone who is rich, elegant, whose eroticism is irresistibly attractive, enjoys sex uninhibitedly, and who dominates our sexual partners?

All that Monique lacks is a fulfilling emotional life. She has no spouse, no family, no friends, only acquaintances. But as the story ends, Monique muses that maybe a little romance in her life would be nice. I hope so. Monique is a very capable woman, it's hard to believe that she cannot get whatever she wants. I am sure that if she chooses to do so, she could transform herself yet again. But that is another story, which perhaps one day Tang will write.

I was having a hard time understanding all the things I could do with Outlook 2003 so I stayed with Outlook Express. Because of this book, I am now an avid user of Outlook 2003. If your new to Outlook and want to learn all about it, I recommend this book.

Major Shortcomings

I purchased this book because I had never used Microsoft Outlook (had been using Lotus Notes for years at work). The book uses primarily examples to illustrate some of the features of Outlook, but does not deal with all of them. To this point, it took me several weeks until I finally figured out how to receive all my mail from my ISP in Outlook (click on "Tools", "send/receive", then "send/receive all"); this is such a key feature that it should be prominently explained/discussed in this book.
Furthermore this book is completely useless for troubleshooting problems with MS Outlook 2003, so you have to use the on-line Help function.
The index is not very comprehensive, so if you are starting your search there, yopu may not find what you are looking for
