Portsmouth NH is a National Trust "Distinctive Destination" because it's always been a hands-on place where local citizens get involved, in everything! As the newspaper reporter who perhaps best covers the local political scene, Chuck McMahon knows these locals well, from having watched through the lens of their civic engagement. The most compelling portraits in this collection of one-page profiles are the contemporary people Chuck knows himself. This book goes a long way in explaining the answer to so many questions that begin, "Why Portsmouth?"

A must read for anyone from Portsmouth

Having been a fan of the writings of local journalist Charles McMahon, I was more than delighted to hear he would be writing a book. As a Lifelong Portsmouth Resident I have known many of the legends of this great city and was thrilled to learn more about them. My advice to anyone is to read this book and you will be entertained, and that's the bottom line!
