A Great Addition to Jazz History Offerings
By David L. Joyner
I was among the many pre-publication reviewers for this text and decided to adopt it for my upcoming jazz history class. There are many fine jazz history survey texts out there, most notably Scott DeVeaux and Gary Giddin's text from W. W. Norton, which I have used for the last couple of years. I was first impressed with the smart layout of the book. But more than just attractive design, it does a great job of visually separating general narrative from focus on political and cultural issues, biography, musical analysis. This is very helpful for the teacher and the student to navigate. Jazz histories, like all histories, can drown you with a lot of information. Here we have the versatility to bend more toward a social history, stylistic continuum, biography, musical analysis, or any nuance that a particular instructor may care to use. Hasse and Lathrop have brought on board a number of jazz history specialists to contribute to the book. For instance, who better to write the chapter on free jazz than John Litweiler, author of the landmard period study "The Freedom Principle" and "Ornette Coleman: A Harmolodic Life"? Or to have Krin Gabbard contribute a sidebar on jazz and film? Yet with all these contributors, the text still has a unified narrative flow. I have known John Hasse for almost thirty years and know him to be one of the most competent yet accessible scholars out there. I'm dismayed by one of the other reviewers-- the professional jazz musician-- that claims that everything in this book is "wrong." I suppose that is evidence of the cultural disconnect between the culture of the jazz professional and the culture of the jazz "academic." None of the writers in this book live in an academic ivory tower. They have their feet on the ground and many are active performing professional musicians, as am I. Potential adopters, you can trust the information in this book, from both the musical and cultural standpoint.

New Jazz History book
By Andy Jaffe
John Hasse and Ted Lathrop's "Discover Jazz" is a thorough look at the various styles and complex history of the music we call Jazz. Every jazz history book faces the daunting challenge of covering what's important about the development and content of the music without being superficial, and this one succeeds in those terms (imaginative instructors will find plenty of opportunity to complement the text with their own additional readings and listening). Topically arranged, the authors' presentation is a useful mix of musical history and criticism, which ranges from contemporary reviews written during the various eras the music was created to current scholarship. Importantly, the text emphasizes roots of the musical antecedents of jazz and the various routes they took to The Americas, as well as recent and current trends in the internationalization of Jazz. The synoptic tables that are included contextualize the music historically, which enables students to better appreciate the state of American culture during the decades in which Jazz was developing. The topical arrangement works well, facilitating comparisons between parallel developments in various subgenres. I am using it with success in my course "A Composer's History of Jazz" at Williams College.

Discover Jazz is a MUST HAVE!
By Rusty Frank
Hasse and Lathrop have achieved the miraculous with their book "Discover Jazz" - they have worked laboriously to create a readable, enjoyable, insightful, and educational book about the history of Jazz, its artists and the music. Perhaps most importantly, they offer up to the reader the skills to get truly inside the music.

As a dance educator, I will keep this landmark book close by.

Highly recommend to music and dance educators alike, as well as fans of jazz music.
