There are many different models of marriage and family therapy; the challenge for students and beginning practitioners is deciding which one best suits their individual purposes. This highly practical volume elucidates the defining characteristics of 14 contemporary models, including their history, views of change, views of family and the role of the therapist; and methods of assessing family dynamics, goal setting; facilitating change; and knowing when to terminate. Each chapter also includes a template for implementing therapy models, and realistic case studies-many drawn from actual practice-to illustrate how each model would address common issues.
In addition, the volume includes extensive interviews with master therapists such as Albert Ellis, Insoo Kim Berg, Sue Johnson, Susan McDaniel, Derald Wing Sue, and many others. They share their ideas of the ways in which change occurs, how they set goals, and how they perform therapy. For further clarification, each therapist illustrates how he/she would proceed via the same case study. Learning how to perform effective family therapy can be an arduous process of trial and error, yet this resource will ease the way for students and currently practicing family therapists who need to revisit the basics.

A Must Have Book for any LMFT.
By Michael J. Uram
Linda Metcalfe's Marriage and Family Therapy--A Practice-Oriented Approach addresses the most common theories and treatments utilized in modern Marriage and Family Therapy.
I would recommend this book to students and faculty in many courses that I teach, as well as for therapists in private practice that need to reference an intervention when utilizing specific theories. This is a current text including the many changes to Private Practice in the past 10 years.
This book is set apart from others, such as Corey's "Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy," due to its in depth nature and interviews with prominent psychotherapists, and matching Goldenberg and Goldenberg's broad encompassing of our practice in "Family Therapy: An Overview."
This book includes master therapist interviews, which really helps the reader understand their experiences. She has gathered many of the most prominent therapists in practice today and has them share not only their expertise, but their motivation for helping others.
The chapters are all written by different authors and based on a single theory. They include treatment-oriented strategies that are wellorganized and presented in an effective manner.
It is almost as comprehensive in developing practice-based interventions as Gehart and Tuttle's "Theory-Based Treatment Planning for Marriage and Family Therapists." Diane Gehart is even interviewed in the Introduction chapter.
In reading this book, I looked from various perspectives. I read the book as a clinician that prefers to hear the theory from the originator, then as a faculty member that looks for a manner to convey the material in small bits to my students. It was a valuable resource from either perspective due to its ability to briefly summarize a theory and apply it in a clinically useful manner.
The book is organized well. Each chapter includes the overview, history, views of change, the family dynamics and how the therapist facilitates that change through the lens of each author, with Linda Metcalf editing and authoring the first chapter.
The chapter that stood out the most for me was Edita Ruzgyte's chapter on Contextual Family Therapy. She described Ivan Boszormenyi- Nagy's history and application of theory in a well balanced, easily understood manner.
As a test of the book's effectiveness, I decided to look up interventions that may be effective for my typical clients, in the way that I usually use Linda Seligman's "Selecting Effective Treatments." I was not let down. For example, I was impressed by the cognitive behavioral models chapter. The examples of cognitive distortions were exactly what I needed to explain arbitrary inferences. In couples' therapy, I find it often difficult to explain the pseudo-self and the solid self. Mary Ann Crossno's chapter clearly explains the concept referencing Bowen's work accurately.
In summary, Linda Metcalf's Marriage and Family Therapy is now my "go to" book. This book, at the list price of $85 is a reasonable buy, and a great deal at any lower price. I highly recommend it to any dynamic faculty, diligent student, caring supervisor, beginning intern and trainee, seasoned practitioner or anxiety filled exam taker.
Reviewer's Note: I reviewed this book for CAMFT and received a complimentary copy.

I Wish I'd Had This All Along
By M. Terry
I often rent my books with the option to buy at the end of a semester; most books are returned unpurchased. Not this one! This text goes through the various models of family therapy, but what's different and great is the Q and A sections that allow practicing clinicians to discuss the model. While some of these interviews are with the giants of the field, Albert Ellis for example, I appreciate reading what contemporary therapists have to say. There is also a list of suggested books at the end of each chapter. For me, this, too, is helpful as I have spent considerable time on Amazon trying to find the best books to learn a particular model or gather intervention ideas, etc.. At this point in my program, I have learned the models in various classes, yet I still learned new information from this text and I wish I would have had this text several classes back. For those of you who haven't yet taken the LMFT-A exam, this text will be helpful as well.

Great book so far
By denise thompson
I haven't made it all the way through yet, but so far it has been a good overview of the main theories in practice in marriage and family therapy. It is accessibly written and I love the interviews and mock case studies from therapists in the field.
The book shipped quickly and arrived new, as advertised.
